MBay Aquarium’s Science Teacher Institute

Last month Paul was invited to talk to middle school teachers part of a project-based science teacher program designed to bring accurate, current science to grade-level classrooms. Since part of their curriculum highlights global fishing, bycatch and current science, the Montery Bay Aquarium educational specialists invited Paul to talk about his 2012 trip to the Southern Indian Ocean.

This particular group asked some rather unique questions about Tragedy of the commons and deep-sea fishing, finding Paul’s research to be paramount to helping mitigate overfishing and accidental catch of important species. For example, describing these never-before-seen sharks, and publishing their life histories and locations could allow fishermen to avoid certain areas populated by important, vulnerable species. This helps everyone, even the sharks!
